Woman forcibly dragged into a car, molested and beaten before being dumped near Maidan, one arrested

Kolkata witnessed another disturbing incident when a 28-year-old woman was forcibly dragged into a car from EM Bypass, molested, abused, and physically assaulted by three men – one of whom she had known for the past three months. The woman, a resident of East Kolkata, was waiting at a bypass bus stop under Pragati Maidan police station when the car stopped. Trusting the familiar face, she was shocked when the men suddenly pushed her inside, locked the doors, and began touching her inappropriately, hurling abuses, and beating her during the ride.

After the ordeal, the trio accused dumped the traumatized woman near Maidan and fled. Patrol police on duty spotted her crying and in pain, immediately rescued her, and took her to Pragati Maidan police station and then to the SSKM hospital for treatment. She had visible injury marks on her body. Based on her statement, police registered a case of molestation.

Using CCTV footage from the area, officers quickly identified and arrested a 24-year-old accused Altaf Alam (Garden Reach resident) while an intense manhunt is on for the other two suspects. Pragati Maidan thana officers are questioning the arrested man to locate his accomplices and are also checking whether the woman has been given any intoxicant or not. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about women’s safety on Kolkata at night, even in busy areas like EM Bypass.
